Poppy Jamie was just 19 years old when she became the youngest entertainment correspondent to ever work at ITN—one of the UK’s largest news organizations. Since then, she’s hosted an array of shows for ITV2, MTV international, Extra USA, TEDx, SKY 1, and most recently launched the first talk show on Snapchat, “Pillow Talk with Poppy.”
After interviewing the likes of Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, Pharrell, Cameron Diaz, Will Smith, the Kardashians, and One Direction (to name a few), Poppy has become a favorite among Hollywood A-listers. When Poppy isn’t on screen, her mission is to help teenagers become more self accepting through her start up Happy Not Perfect, an app currently being developed.
We chatted with Poppy about the dos and don’ts of Snapchat, her favorite interview with singer James Bay, and what to expect from Happy Not Perfect.
Mallory Llewellyn: Tell me a bit about what to expect from Happy Not Perfect? What inspired you to start it?
PJ: The Happy Not Perfect app is my total passion in life! I think about it every minute. It’s like having your own pocket cheerleader helping you deal with emotions when you feel them. I really urge everyone to sign up on the website so they can hear about the launch as soon as it’s live. It will be a free app and I hope it will be really useful to everyone! With 1 in 4 people admitting social media makes them feel depressed, this was my attempt at creating a solution. I am a huge believer that we should all live life based on what makes us happy, not what we think we should do to be perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist, but when we focus on what makes us individuals, that’s when we start learning to be happier.
What is the biggest piece of advice that you wish to give teen girls?
PJ: Don’t believe what you read on Instagram. A fun photo doesn’t mean the party was fun. FOMO is made up. And to remember that you are on your own path which is totally separate to your friends. There’s no time for jealousy because what is rightfully yours will be given to you.
Have you been inspired by any TEDxTeen talks?
PJ: There have been so many. Last week, Meltem Avcil spoke and moved my core. She launched a campaign #setherfree after being a child detainee. All the speakers at TEDxTeen demonstrate clearly that age is no barrier because at any point you are able to impact the world.
Who do you think was your favorite interview on your Snapchat show “Pillow Talk?”
PJ: Probably James Bay because we took “Pillow Talk” on the road backstage at Lollapalooza in Chicago, and it was so much fun. James was one of the guests on the show and he was so chill, yet fun. I always love having a fellow Brit on the show when I’m in the USA.
Okay so, what would you say is the BIGGEST Snapchat DON’T?
PJ: DON’T send a snapchat of yourself naked. I sometimes get these random penis snaps from people I don’t know and it’s so weird!
When you travel for work, what’s your go to in-flight outfit? Do you believe the airport is your runway?
PJ: I have a fairy tale belief I still might meet my future husband on an airplane, so I try and stay a little stylish when I travel. This doesn’t usually end up being the case though, because after a 12 hour flight I usually just walk out looking and feeling a bit disheveled!
Who are some of your style icons?
PJ: Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn from the past. I’m currently loving Chiara Ferragni’s Instagram. Alexa Chung always looks amazing and I crush over Kendall Jenner a lot.
How do you decide what you’re wearing before a red carpet?
PJ: I usually plan a few days in advance and decide what I’ll feel most happy in. If I’m interviewing then I have to think practically. Like, “Will a nipple slip out this dress if I move the microphone too quickly?” There’s some silly logistical points I have to take into account. If I’m just attending then I can usually wear whatever I think gives me the most confidence.
What’s your favorite item you most recently purchased?
PJ: This vintage jacket from a market in LA. It’s brown tassel suede and I’m obsessed with it.
Do you have a favorite look from this season’s couture shows?
PJ: Everything from Dior…it was a beautiful show!
NYFW is so soon! What’s the #1 way to survive it?
PJ: Sleep! No matter how fun a party is, take yourself home to sleep when the clock strikes 2am. Your body and mind will love you for it the next day.
