On Saturday afternoon, Central Park’s Great Lawn hosted top musical artists onstage for the annual Global Citizen Festival. Performances by Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Coldplay and Beyoncé mesmerized the audience while raising awareness of the Global Citizen Foundation’s work.

The festival is known for its star-studded audience and renowned guest speakers. This year’s speakers included Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient who appeared on stage with four other young women from conflict zones around the world. But the biggest surprise was a guest appearance by Michelle Obama, who took the stage with Beyoncé to announce her new campaign #62MillionGirls, which focuses on providing education for girls.

According to Refinery29, Michelle Obama had released a video earlier in the day discussing her new campaign, but waited to attend the festival to fully explain her message. #62MillionGirls focuses on giving girls both the economic and social opportunity to attend school, and hopes to educate the public about the crisis many women are facing around the world. The first lady stated, “When girls aren’t given the chance to realize their potential, the whole world loses out.”

Biggest shocker of the night, though? Time says of Malala Yousafzai—”Malala seemed more impressed with her fellow students than with Queen Bey.”
